Subjects of the Mother Country are sticking it to television studios in the Colonies by illegally downloading a ton of U.S. programming.

A study by UK technology consultancy Envisional finds that Britain leads the world in illegal TV downloads, accounting for one-fifth of the TV programming changing hands on file-sharing nets such as BitTorrent and eDonkey. Australia comes in at #2, with the U.S. in third.

Experts say driving the demand is the fact that popular U.S. shows like “24,” “Desperate Housewives” and “The West Wing” don’t air on overseas networks until months after their original U.S. run.
