Bond movies are fascinating fodder for nerds like us – dashing men, sultry vixens and an endless array of gizmos and gadgets that would be quite handy in everyday life. Not to mention Odd Job, we could really use him around the office.
So you can understand why we were intrigued when we learned that MI5 declassified a series of documents and photographs that given insight into the world of the real-life James Bond. Biographers of Bond creator Ian Fleming say the author’s stint in British naval intelligence during World War II significantly influenced the spy series.
Judging by the information released by MI5, boy did it. The BBC looks at the papers, which detail a secret war to protect Gibraltar, as well as incidents of exploding pens, Italian frogmen who doubled as human torpedoes and a female spy who called herself the Queen of Hearts.
