“Airports are very large entities,” says Mark Bolger of T-Mobile HotSpot, which outfits many airports. “They’re governmental bodies. There are just a lot of steps involved with making decisions of this nature.”
USA Today surveyed the country’s 30 busiest airports and found that around half provide Wi-Fi in public areas, while they all offer it in membership-only airline clubs.
Other interesting facts:
- The number of Wi-Fi connections at Dallas/Fort Worth airport runs about 18,000 a month, compared with 50 per month when it was launched in 2000.
- The average time spent on T-Mobile airport connections is 40 minutes.
- Only one of the top five U.S. airports provides wireless ‘Net access outside of airline clubs: No. 4 Dallas/Fort Worth. The other four – Atlanta, Chicago O’Hare, Los Angeles and Phoenix – are in varying stages of rolling out Wi-Fi in public areas.
