Southern California detectives say street gangs are increasingly taking their spats, graffiti and tough-talk to the Web, making their presence known and marking their turf on regional- and Latino-based Web sites.
Gang experts say members are using the Web to recruit new members and glorify the lifestyle, though those monitoring the activity can have a hard time determining who’s for real and who is a wannabe with an active imagination.
“These kids are computer-savvy,” Gabe Morales, author of Varrio Warfare: Violence in the Latino Community, told the San Jose Mercury News. “They may be better equipped with a keyboard than with an aerosol can. It’s a freedom of speech thing, but it’s not positive.”
