Between increased eBay fees and now state laws, those trying to make their living via the online auction site can’t catch a break – at least those eBayers in Ohio.
Ohio’s passed a law, going into effect May 2, that requires all auctioneers to get a $200 state license, take a class, pass a test and secure a $50,000 bond. The intent of the law is to protect citizens from scam auctions. Makes sense. Except, it’s not just for those “Do I hear ten dollah, ten dollah, ten dollah, ten dollah, ten! Do I hear fifteen dollah fifteen fifteen?” auctioneers, the law also covers anyone who sells goods via online auctions, and that includes those who sell – a little or a lot – on eBay.
The author of the bill says it’s not intended to apply to those eBayers who sell a few goods here and there, but should cover those who run eBay stores. eBay disagrees. Read on here.
