Smokers hit with online state sales tax

We kinda feel bad for smokers. They’re addicted to a dangerous, expensive drug that most would probably quit if they could. Now, to add insult to injury, some of those who have been buying their cartons online to avoid pricey sales tax are getting hitting with big bills of – you guessed it – past-due accumulated state sales tax.

USA Today looks at how states like New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania and the City of New York are mailing big bills to smokers/online shoppers.

“My biggest beef is, unless they go after every single person that buys anything on the Internet and doesn’t pay taxes, it’s not fair,” Sheila Hansen told the paper. “Right now, they’re only targeting smokers.”
