This week’s Voice on the Net show is one of the last places we’d expect to see AOL. Unless the company was announcing the launch of a VoIP service. Which it did. (Ed. – Well, that explains that.)
At VON yesterday, CEO Jonathan Miller said AOL Internet Phone Service will begin rolling out within a month and will be offered only to AOL customers in select cities progressively until it is offered nationwide. And, it will only be offered bundled with AOL Internet access. We wonder if this will be like AOL’s broadband service, which it launched, pitched to customers and then phased out because it wasn’t making enough green?
The AP story on the announcement offers this quote from Miller: “We can help mass-market adoption of VoIP. We can utilize our national footprint. We can help the entire industry become well known.”
The AOL customer base is not exactly Early Adopter Central, so it’ll be interesting to see how this pans out.
