Kids’ rooms are tech hubs

A new study from the Kaiser Family Foundation finds that children’s bedrooms are starting to resemble your local Best Buy.

With cable or satellite feeds, computers and video game consoles, kids’ rooms are starting to look like multimedia centers. Got any books in there, Junior? And, no, gaming guides don’t count.

The survey finds that:

  • 68% have a TV in their room

  • 54% have a VCR or DVD player

  • 49% have a video game console

  • 37% have cable or satellite TV

  • 20% have Internet access

Researchers say all the technology is turning children into “media multitaskers,” with nearly one-third noting they chat on the phone, surf the Web, instant message, watch TV or listen to music while doing their homework.

“We are not necessarily saying that kids spending more time with more media is a bad thing,” survey director Vicky Rideout said. “This is something all parents have to decide based on what age their kids are, how they are doing in school and the parents’ own values.”
