The title of World’s Coolest Library may shift to Long Island. We know, we were surprised, too.
It seems the South Huntington Public Library is one of the first in the nation to download audio books from iTunes, transfer them to iPod Shuffles and then loan the Shuffles out to patrons. After a short pilot program, the library is loaning out 10 Shuffles, each holding one audio book.
Wired News says patrons, such Lee Jacknow, can now listen to audio books anywhere and are pleased with the mobility. “Jacknow said now he can listen to Grisham in his car, when he’s working and even in bed,” writes Wired. OK, so maybe everyone except Mrs. Jacknow is pleased with that feature.
Interestingly, the library says move to Shuffles is saving them money. Downloading an audio book from iTunes cost between $15-$25, while a title on CD is $75.
