The Tennessean reports that 30 Somali Muslims have been fired by Dell for leaving their posts to pray.
The employees at Dell’s Nashville plant say they requested 5 minutes to perform their daily sunset prayer, but were told they had to wait for their break. Muslims must perform the prayer – one of five throughout the day – at sunset no matter where they are or what they’re doing.
”The company’s practice is to accommodate religious beliefs, so long as the accommodations are reasonable, don’t disrupt business operations and are consistent with our policies on operating a respectful workplace,” Dell spokesman Mark Drury told the newspaper. “Employees are allowed time off with pay to pray. We have traffic-free areas for them to use for prayer.”
The city’s Metro Human Relations Commission is stepping in to broker a compromise and perhaps get the workers rehired.
