China restricts online forums

China is no fan of the lawless, free-speech-driven Internet. Last year it began cracking down on the country’s many Internet cafes, and now it is clamping down on student-run online forums at its universities.

Unhappy with students’ ability to interact anonymously with anyone from around the country, the government is blocking off-campus users from entering forums and is requiring those who participate to register with their real names. Those considered “off-campus” even include alumni, faculty and students from other universities.

The moves, part of the Community Party’s bid to tighten “ideological education,” aren’t sitting well with students, who have begun demonstrating to protest the restrictions.
