Did you get that last part? March 11. University officials say they waited 17 days to announce the theft for hopes of retrieving the laptop. Um, right. Perhaps Berkeley didn’t want to get lumped in with all the other chuckleheads suffering similar breeches this month – see ChoicePoint, Bank of America, LexisNexis, et al.
Oh, and then there was that pesky little state law the school had to comply with, which mandates organizations notify those whose information has been compromised.
