Today’s Register reports that 41-year-old Qiu Chengwei reportedly killed Zhu Caoyuan after Zhu sold their joint possession: a virtual dragon sabre the men won playing “Legend of Mir 3” online.
Qiu “lent” Zhu the sword. Zhu then sold it to another gamer for $873 – real money. Qiu reported the saber stolen to police, who said they had no recourse as the object doesn’t technically exist.
The site reports: “Zhu promised to hand over the cash but an angry Qui lost patience and attacked Zhu at his home, stabbing him in the left chest with great force and killing him.”
Authorities say the incident brings up the sticky issue of who actually “owns” a virtual possession. And, of course, there’s the whole “Killing someone over a game” issue.
