Data loss starts with users

We recently were sent a survey that states that most data recovery efforts go awry because users like us try to get back whatever we lost ourselves.

Channeling our best Richard Dawson impression, we type: The survey says “Only 13% of those surveyed think to contact their IT department first before attempting to recover missing data themselves.

We think we can attribute that to two reasons: Either we don’t want the Help Desk seeing what we lost – heh, heh; or it’s because we know they’ll come over and intimate we’re incredibly dumb. Except if you’re powerful enough that they won’t adopt that tone with you. Which we, unfortunately, aren’t.

Anyway, here’s our favorite observation from the survey, which was sponsored by Ontrack Data Recovery:

“33% of interviewees surveyed in the U.K. will shout at the computer as their first line of defense, while 38% of their U.S. counterparts resign themselves to merely sighing at the first sign of computer malfunction.”
