In another example of “Technology changes the way we do things,” the AP is reporting that news of Pope John Paul II’s death Saturday was first leaked to reporters via e-mail.
The e-mail announcement was a departure from the legacy method – an unscheduled closing of the giant Bronze Door beneath a portico off St. Peter’s Square. The door is closed nightly at 8 p.m. and reopened every morning.
And while the AP says the Vatican Press Office leaked the news to some credentialed journalists, it wasn’t a complete abandonment of tradition. The Pope died at 9:37 p.m. Saturday, after the door had already been closed for the night.
