If you’re already freaked out about the amount of personal information available on the Web, don’t read this story. We don’t want to be responsible if you never get out of bed again.
But if you’re doubtful that much of your personal details can be found online, you may want to check out the new, ultra-scary ZabaSearch.com.
San Francisco columnist David Lazarus takes a look at the free tool, which he says represents “Everything that’s great and everything that’s frightening about the Internet…”
Type a name (and preferably a state) into the search box. ZabaSearch rolls through a series of public records (Zaba officials won’t say which) and returns close and exact matches, revealing name, address, date of birth, address, old addresses and phone number.
Click on a person’s address and you can get a satellite photo of their home, as well as directions on how to get there. Spend $20 and you can run a background check on the person.
“Think what this could mean for anyone with a stalker problem or a restraining-order issue,” notes Gail Hillebrand, a staff attorney with Consumers Union in San Francisco.
