Nerds rule Boston bars

With all of our universities, big-deal research labs and, well, Cheers, it’s no surprise Boston is a nerd mecca. The Boston Globe reports that some city bars and restaurants are taking advantage of that by hosting “Nerd Nite.”

The Lambda Lambda Lambda crowd is now gathering at area establishments for drinks, trivia, debates and slideshows on topics such as the dog-faced fruit bats of Southeast Asia and how humic acid impacts the sex lives of swordtail fish. You know, typical bar talk.

Bar owners love the crowds as they’re brining in big money on slow nights. And there are other benefits, too.

”The nerds never ask if there’s a cash machine,” said Dave Balerna, co-owner of Midway Cafe. ”And I don’t have to worry about a nerd acting up while someone is giving a talk about clams having sex.”
