Wired reports that a Florida man bought the URL BenedictXVI.com three weeks before new pope Joseph Ratzinger chose the name yesterday.
Perhaps Rogers Cadenhead just visited top Irish online bookmaker PaddyPower.com, which had Benedict a 3-1 favorite for the name of Pope John Paul II’s successor.
However, Cadenhead did hedge his bets by also buying ClementXV.com, InnocentXIV.com, LeoXIV.com, PaulVII.com and PiusXII.com on April 1.
Cadenhead, who will have a nifty hosting bill next month as the URL (which redirects to his blog) is getting 100 hits a minute, told Wired he bought the domain as a “game,” noting: “If I didn’t do it, someone less reputable would.”
