After convicted sex offenders are released from prison, they’re required to register at their local police station so authorities can perform spot checks and keep an eye on them. The problem is, as many as 25% don’t register or move without notifying police, effectively dropping out of sight.
Law enforcement in Westchester County, N.Y., may be turning to technology for help as they’re eyeing GPS to track paroled sex offenders.
County Executive Andrew Spano said a GPS-enabled bracelet would allow authorities “to restrict a sex offender’s movements, set up exclusion zones to restrict access to children and know exactly where a sex offender is 24 hours a day….Just as importantly, these dangerous predators will know they are being watched.”
