An ingenious cell phone thief

The Register’s got a story on a female mobile phone thief that smacks of urban legend. Yet we haven’t seen any stories refuting its legitimacy, so here goes.

From Romania comes the story of Ruxandra Gardian, who was accused of stealing a cell phone at a restaurant. A diner said he saw her steal the phone, Gardian denied it and apparently didn’t have it on her person when police questioned her. Apparently.

Someone suggested they call the stolen phone’s number to see if they could hear it. We’ll let The Register take it from here:

“On dialing the number they heard a sound coming from under Gardian’s clothes and took her to police headquarters to be strip-searched…shaken [police] officer Aurel Popescu commented: ‘I’ve seen a lot in my time as a policeman but never anything like this.’ “
