But instead of confronting the student, Rine told his class that he worked for several government agencies, who would track the computer wirelessly and via passive trackers embedded in the bezel of laptop screen.
He noted the feds would lock up the thief for years due to the sensitive information on the notebook and told the class that whoever stole the laptop should return it ASAP to avoid prosecution.
The story was picked up by mainstream media and, whaddaya know, Rine doesn’t work for the feds, nor are the spies looking for his laptop. A UC Berkley spokesperson says the professor “exaggerated” his story in order to get the laptop back.
And, to add insult to injury, Rine’s laptop was never returned.
