New Zealand movie theatre owners are looking into the legality of installing cell phone jammers in their buildings.
The jammers would render cell phones useless, which would keep patrons from answering calls, making calls or text messaging, all of which annoy their fellow movie-goers.
Duncan Mackenzie, spokesman for the Motion Pictures Exhibitors Association, said cells cause a huge disruption in theaters and have led to confrontations and even the threat of violence.
The worst offenders? Middle aged women “who answered their phones in cinemas and continued conversations, getting aggravated if asked to turn their cell phones off or leave.”
