A quick-thinking British chef saved his life after grabbing his cell phone and taking a picture of the rare spider that bit him in the hand.
A Brazilian Wandering Spider made its way into a crate of bananas that eventually ended up in the pub where 23-year-old Matthew Stevens worked. The highly-aggressive spider crawled out of the crate and under a dishcloth. When Stevens went to pick up the cloth, the spider – the size of the man’s palm – bit him.
“I went to try and pick it up and it bit me again. It landed in the freezer, which stunned it,” Stevens said. He’s made of stronger stuff than us. If we saw a spider the size of our palm, we’re high-tailing it the other way screaming like a sissy.
Anyway, Stevens was so unfazed by the encounter he took a picture of the highly-venomous spider as a memento, but soon after he was on his way to the emergency room with a severely swollen hand. He quickly came down with more severe symptoms and chest pains, and doctors were stymied as they didn’t know what type of spider bite they were dealing with.
Voila, Stevens remembered his cell phone pic, which was quickly dispatched off to the Bristol Zoo for identification. Stevens was treated with the right antidote and released the next day.
