International piracy watchdogs say the country is the copyright infringement capital of the world, moving more than 13 million pirated CDs and DVDs to 46 countries every month. Frighteningly, those were 2003 estimates, and officials say the pirates’ copying capabilities are likely to have increased dramatically.
According to the BBC, “The Pakistani domestic market alone generates some $27 million every year – and those are just one-tenth of the total bootleg CDs and DVDs made in Pakistan.” Copyright officials believe the country costs copyright holders $2.7 billion per year.
