America’s grandmothers are smartening up and leaving AOL for greener, faster and less-expensive pastures.
The ISP reports it lost 2.3 million customers from March 2004 to March 2005. Now AOL is certainly not bereft of customers, who still number 21.7 million. And if our math is right – and it probably isn’t – that means AOL lost 9.5% of its customers over that 1-year period – not a good churn rate.
The Register’s story doesn’t mention any factors that would have aided the subscriber drop, but certainly RBOC DSL bundling and the increasing push of cable broadband services could be wooing AOL customers away.
