University of Missouri-Columbia sociology professor Ed Brent apparently got sick of doing his job, so he’s outsourced paper-grading to a computer. (Ed. – At least it wasn’t India.)
We’re guessing Ed has tenure.
According to Brent, he kept noticing the same errors in his students’ Introduction to Sociology essays so he wrote a program to grade them. The SAGrader software “counts the number of points he wanted his students to include and analyzes how well concepts are explained.”
Only essay drafts are sent through the program, and “students are encouraged to use SAGrader for a better shot at an A.” Brent and his two teaching assistants (aka legacy SAGraders) handle the final paper.
“I don’t think we want to replace humans,” Brent said. “But we want to do the fun stuff, the challenging stuff. And the computer can do the tedious but necessary stuff.”
We like the first part of his quote. Maybe what he really meant to say was “I don’t think we want to replace humans – at least until after I retire and make millions off this program. Then feel free.”
