Out of the U.K. comes news of an amusing Linux hack that we shouldn’t find amusing.
The Register says Linux hackers have developed Car Whisperer software, which with a directional antenna and laptop lets folks hack into vehicles’ unsecured Bluetooth hands-free cell phone setups and eavesdrop on conversations or broadcast their own audio through the car’s microphone.
The software only works on cars whose Bluetooth passkeys are set to defaults like 0000 or 1234, a scenario similar to those unsecured corporate or neighborhood wireless routers with the names “Netgear,” “Linksys,” or “Default.” It’s somewhat like war driving for lazy people – the cars drive by, you sit still and hack in.
