Blu-ray: Betamax for the new millennium?

Some gamers are getting ticked off at Sony over its insistence in including a Blu-ray drive in the PS3, driving up the cost and delaying the availability of more units. “Blu-ray is adding $150 to $200 to the product. They’ve created something that is not for today’s market,” notes Yankee Group analyst Michael Goodman. “It’s not a market driver, it’s only driving the price higher.” Even more troublesome is the fact that Blu-ray is an unproved format and owners don’t want to get locked into owner what could – could – be Betamax for the new millennium. And, remember, Beta was Sony’s horse in the video race in the ’80s. Instead of becoming the standard, it became glue and is still a punch line 20+ years later. Via Reuters
