Adobe Systems has announced the Adobe Media Player at the NAB show in Las Vegas last week.
“This desktop application expands Adobe’s Internet video solutions, adding to an emerging ecosystem that enables new ways to distribute and monetize media, while helping viewers discover and view high-quality content both online and offline,”
Just like Real Player or Quicktime, Adobe Media Player is delivered as a downloadable package that enables higher quality Flash format playback, the ability to download and view videos offline, full screen playback, as well as a Favorites feature that automatically downloads new episodes of favorite TV shows or video podcasts, according to Adobe. The player is cross-platform, based on open standards — including RSS and SMIL — and brings viewers the highly desired ability to play the web’s most popular video format outside of their browser. What they are not telling you is that this is the next step in the evolution of the Adobe VoIP Player, the secret project that has been going on inside Adobe for the last year. The VoIP capabilities will leverage the Breeze Conferencing product to create a truely cross platform experience. Remember also that flash now runs on a large number of mobile phones and devices further adding to it’s footprint. Having it as a desktop client rather than an embedded web component allows it go get around the significant challenges of running a VoIP client within the browser. It also allows the interaction with presence clients, a key component for application services for telephony. It will then be up to the imagination of the developers to take it where they will…
