Enterprise SSDs take off

With solid state drive (SSD) implementation growing at such fast rates, it’s virtually impossible to list all the SSD manufacturers of single and multi level cell SSDs for consumer, mobile and enterprise flash drive adoption. It’s much easier to list them by the vendors that have adopted them for their storage systems and then detail them by the interface they offer. So saying that, here is a sampling of enterprise SSD manufacturers’ and their products.

Chart of enterprise SSDs

You’ll notice that iSCSI and NAS vendors are using Intel’s X25-E solid state drives with SATA interfaces; vendors such as EMC, IBM and Compellent are using STEC’s Zeus IOPS with Fibre Channel interfaces. All vendors though are using SSD as Tier 0 storage, where it is available for those transaction-hungry applications.

You can expect more vendors to adopt SSDs. NetApp for instance has implemented SSDs with its Performance Application Module, an add-in PCIe-based adapters with onboard SSD. The company has also – though we don’t know what kind of flash storage – promised that all its FAS and V Series systems will support SSD.
