In defense of brainiac 12-year-olds, 05/24/07:  I wrote a blurb earlier this week about Carnegie Mellon professor Steven Rudich being honored with a share of the Association for Computing Machinery’s 2007 Gödel Prize in June. In the write-up, I made note of Rudich saying of the 20th century mathematician for whom the award is named: “Gödel has been my luminary hero since I was 12.” I pointed out that what separates accomplished computer scientists like Rudich from lowly editors like me might be that my heroes at age 12 were a couple of Red Sox baseball players whose mathemetical prowess mostly likely consisted of tracking their batting statistics and their contracts. What Nortel has cooking in its research labs, 05/22/07:  Nortel is pushing “communications-enabled applications” big time in the latest edition of its “The Future Made Simple” newsletter on the company’s latest research efforts. In particular, Nortel points to its work with Microsoft and IBM on this front. The gist from Nortel is that while all sorts of anytime, anywhere network technology is now available, most apps aren’t designed to work in such environments. Fred Lynn, Jim Rice and Kurt Godel: Luminary heroes all, 05/22/07:  Computer scientist Steven Rudich of Carnegie Mellon and Alexander Razborov of Steklov Mathematical Institute in Moscow will share the Association for Computing Machinery’s 2007 Gödel Prize in June for their work on a problem regarding the sort of computational complexity behind the security of everything from ATM cards to computer passwords.
