endif; ?>Today, we’d like to highlight two articles readers may want to reference on IMS, or IP Multimedia Subsystem. As our readers may recall, IMS provides an architectural framework offering a common way for multiple wireless and wireline networks to deliver multimedia applications. IMS uses SIP, or Session Initiation Protocol as a key component.
The first article looks at the current realities of IMS deployments, pointing out that despite the broad commitment IMS has received (many infrastructure suppliers and carriers believe IMS is “the single most significant technology change of the decade”) — real world issues remain to be solved. The review looks at progress in IMS standards development, product delivery by the major IMS component suppliers, carrier infrastructure rollouts, applications delivery, and the yet-to-be-proven business case model. The second article looks at how to protect IMS networks from attack. It suggests that while attacks on IMS networks are similar to those on e-commerce sites, IMS security needs a different approach because IMS has unique vulnerabilities. The article discusses in detail how to defend an IMS network, and looks at the progress of standards bodies to address remaining issues. The analysis concludes that both traditional security measures and IMS-specific methodologies are needed — especially for attacks that may be launched by a user who is already inside the network.
