As we mentioned last week, Cisco’s dealings with China have continually come under scrutiny (See our Q&A with China expert James Fallows ). Today, the Washington Post brings up the issue again in a story about a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee on the Global Internet Freedom Act, which is focused on nixing Internet censorship. The story begins:
Cisco Systems, seeking to penetrate the Chinese market, prepared an internal marketing presentation in which it appeared to be willing to assist the Chinese Ministry of Public Security in its goal of “combating Falun Gong evil cult and other hostile elements,” according to a translation of a document obtained by congressional investigators.
Cisco goes on to defend itself, noting the presentation was six years old and was for internal use only in China. Cisco must have made a killing in China to be putting up with this grief…
