Cisco and Juniper each gained a point of revenue market share in the worldwide IP router, Carrier Ethernet and ATM switch markets in the first quarter, according to Infonetics Research.
Cisco increased its lead in the Carrier Ethernet switch market – which was down 11% in Q1 — by gaining six revenue share points.
IP router sales broke with tradition and grew 6% in the usually lackluster first quarter, according to Infonetics. Sales of service provider routers and switches are usually down in the first quarter, as most were in the first three months of 2008. But IP edge and core routers bucked the trend and are up 35% from last year’s Q1.
Worldwide, revenue for service provider routers and switches totaled $3.0 billion in 1Q08, down 1% from 4Q07, Infonetics found. Worldwide ATM switch sales fell 29% sequentially.
Gains were made across the range of vendors, Infonetics reports. Most of the sales were from North America and Europe/Middle East/Africa, although Asia Pacific and Central and Latin America also saw healthy increases.In 2007, worldwide sales of service provider routers and switches totaled $11.2 billion, an all-time high for the equipment category. Sales of service provider routers and switches have been steadily climbing since 2003, Infonetics notes.
