Consumer video will suck up the biggest proportion of Internet traffic increases from 2006 to 2011, according to a Wall Street Journal story citing a Cisco report that’s due out any day.

According to the wSJ story, video streaming and downloads will increase from 9% of all consumer Internet traffic in 2006 to 30% in 2011. But it’s not the likes of YouTube that will be driving factor, says the story.

High-quality video delivered over the Internet to play on TV sets is a major wild card. If consumers begin downloading massive amounts of high-definition movies and TV shows, that could start clogging the so-called last-mile connections to homes.

And it just so happens that Cisco makes gear for service providers to help keep up demand.
