At last months’ Cisco Networkers conference, one of the big news items was the announcement that Cisco and NetQoS were integrating monitoring into Cisco’s WAAS WAN optimization gear. Lindi Horton, technical lead on the Cisco WAAS-NetQoS integration offers an update. She explains:

“The first thing [network managers] want to do is gain visibility into what the users are actually using, which changes day to day, and do an application profile of what’s flowing across those links and what applications are being optimized. And then take the perspective of, “If we do deploy WAN optimization, does that actually improve the applications that we wanted to improve?”

The NetQoS/Cisco combination will help users quantify the application attributes they want to improve, she says. From there, they can create reliable baselines to track progress.
