USA Today reports that last Sunday the Pope and his message was beamed to 33-foot-tall TV screens in St. Peter’s Square and a micro-TV camera recorded his journey home from the hospital. Officials say the Pope could increasingly rely on such technology for the remainder of his papacy.
“We are increasingly looking at the prospect of some kind of electronic or virtual papacy,” says John Allen, a correspondent for the U.S.-based National Catholic Reporter and the author of several books about the papacy. “We don’t know exactly what that means yet, but it will become clearer over time.”
