Pop quiz, hot shot: How many of the Fortune 1000 CEOs blog?
If you thought 0, well done – and you can go faster than 55, we don’t care.
USA Today writes a somewhat odd story today wondering why none of the Fortune 1000 CEOs keeps a blog. Well, we can think of three reasons right off the bat.
1. They’re Fortune 1000 CEOs. They don’t have the time.
2. A real, unfettered blog would cause their PR Department to drop dead on the spot.
3. Workplace blogs don’t work. How many people have we seen fired because they told the naked truth about their place of business?
It’s naive and almost cute that USA Today would expect any CEO to keep a real blog and not just some image-driven clap-trap written by a PR peon.
Yet the paper writes it’s surprised: “One written by a CEO would slice through traditional media gatekeepers and bring him or her unedited to the desktop of customers, employees, Wall Street analysts and competitors. A blog by a prominent CEO would attract instant traffic, could influence public opinion, perhaps steer legislation and maybe sell a few widgets.”
No, McPaper, any CEO who even thought of proposing a real, no-holds-barred blog would be gone before you could type “blogspot.”
