More security woes for Firefox, Linux

Yesterday we wrote about Symantec’s Firefox/Mac slam, in which the company noted that neither is necessarily more secure than Microsoft anymore. We noted: “Now, if they somehow worked in a ‘Linux sucks’ slam in there, they would run the table on offending IT cults.”

Well, today Linux users get some bad news, but not from Symantec. And, well, Firefox is just having a bad week, period. Today’s Register reports that penguin fans are being warned about a Firefox vulnerability that could let hackers take control of Unix or Linux boxes:

“The security bug creates a means for hackers to execute arbitrary shell commands providing they trick users into following a malicious link in an external application which uses Firefox as the default browser, such as the Evolution email client on various versions of Red Hat Linux.”
