In a not-so-subtle advance move against Google, PayPal has announced a promotion in which those who use the service Nov. 23 through May 15, 2007 on any of 100,000 sites will get a $20 rebate.
The eBay-owned payment service is making this pre-emptive move on whispers that Google would roll out its rival Checkout service to Web merchants free during the holiday shopping season.
PayPal is acting like that nerdy kid who paid you to be his friend. But Wall Street – full of people who no doubt paid others to be their friends – likes the move as eBay stock was up.
