Overland Storage this week debuted a disaster recovery and business continuity appliance for small and mid-sized businesses. The REO Business Continuity Appliance is available in two models – the BCA 100 and BCA 200 – which are targeted for supporting as many as 10 application servers.
Overland Storage this week debuted a disaster recovery and business continuity appliance for small and midsized businesses. The REO Business Continuity Appliance is available in two models – the BCA 100 and BCA 200 – which are targeted for supporting as many as 10 application servers.
The REO BCAs are application-aware – they support Microsoft Exchange and SQL Server, VMware environments and Windows and Linux file servers. They build on Overland’s REO disk-based storage array platform and bolster Overland’s tape and disk-base products.
REO BCAs can be deployed for disaster recovery in which an appliance is situated between local and remote sites. Deployment of the BCA is possible in a number of configurations – BCAs can be located both at the primary site and remote disaster recovery site, where they can be attached to any type of heterogeneous storage. They can be deployed in continuous local backup environments, where a REO BCA would be situated between the production servers and a local recovery point or in virtual environments, where the appliance is installed between local and remote physical/virtual servers.
The BCA uses continuous and synchronous data replication over the IP network, which allows customers to achieve near-zero recovery point and recovery time objectives (RPO and RTO). It also uses a patented point-in-time bookmarking technology, so data can be retrieved from nearly any point-in-time or from pre-determined or ad-hoc events such as the month-end closing of the books.
The BCAs are coupled with a variety of enterprise-class features not found in other vendors’ offerings. Among these are synchronous replication and the inclusion of environmental profiling and storage management, monitoring and reporting software, which let customers visualize information including data change rates, network bandwidth and I/O throughput. The environmental profiler lets users view RPO actualization for individual servers and manage network utilization, protection coverage and perform environmental trending. In addition, Overland supports the REO BCA with a number of assessment, installation and configuration support plans.
