VMware, an EMC company, is rounding out its server virtualization portfolio with the addition of a subscription-based technology network to assist developers and IT professionals building out virtualized environments.
The VMware Technology Network (VMTN) is an important tool for IT to have in its arsenal because it guides IT through what may be a complicated process of configuring, testing and deploying applications on virtual servers.
Comprised of pre-built application environments, access to other VMware applications, discussion forums and online technical resources, the VMTN is available now for $299 per user annually.
The pre-built application environments consist of pre-configured applications packaged in individual virtual machines. Among the vendors distributing their software in virtual machines are Novell, MySQL AB, BEA, Oracle and Red Hat. With entire application environments virtualized, IT can avoid much of the problems encountered with testing, evaluating and deploying applications. BEA, for instance distributes its WebLogic Platform in virtual machines.
The VMTN subscription provides VMware products, such as the developer version of VMware ESX Server for Windows and Linux, support and product upgrades online. It also includes Linux and Windows versions of VMware Workstation, VMware GSX Server and the multiprocessor VMware SMP and VMware P2V Assistant, which allows migration from a physical machine to virtual machines.
VMware claims that VMTN will allow developers and IT to create, provision, test and configure machines faster. What would have taken days before will now take minutes.
