Cities make some odd bets on major sporting events no doubt, but few times have high-and-mighty-technology-players gotten into this silly game.
Today though I give you Alteva a provider of hosted VoIP services. The company took time out from its busy schedule to acknowledge the fact it had won two bushels of oranges from a friendly wager with competitor Televations. You see, Alteva is based in Philadelphia and Televations is in Tampa, Fla. – the participants in the recently concluded World Series. That series was won handily by the Philadelphia Phillies, four games to one.
The bet between the two service providers had Alteva putting up a dozen Philly cheesesteaks against Telovations’ two bushels of Florida oranges.
Now, I have nothing against oranges but I am not sure celebrating such a prize is all that significant. I mean the cheesesteaks would have been a great trophy but the outcome that would have made that possible was far less desirable. [Disclaimer: The editor is a huge Phillies fan].
A cooler bet would have been a weekend for the Alteva employees in Clearwater, Fla. – right down the street from Tampa in March where the Phillies hold spring training. Now that would have been a bet.
