The current Miss America said during her reign she would help fight Internet predators and protect kids online. Now as in many such cases she could have been talking a good game – but Miss America Lauren Nelson has been putting her words into action.
Nelson said today she would join Symantec officials as they travel the country this summer in a traveling digital security technology display all with the idea of teaching parents all about Internet security issues and protecting their children.
The tour is also expected to fill parents in on cyberbullying – a growing problem. A study released recently says people who are bullied at work or school may not be able to escape their tormentors in the virtual world either. Researchers claim that bullying, known in cyberspace as griefing, is as big a problem in the virtual world as is in the real world.
This move comes on the heels of a sting operation Nelson took part in New York in April where she helped investigators with an undercover sex sting. As a result of that operations eleven men were arrested after Nelson created an online profile of a 14-year-old girl that included photographs of her as a teenager.
