Amazon CTO: Web Services surprise

In a recent Network World Q&A, Amazon CTO Werner Vogels says more than 240,000 developers have registered for Amazon Web Services. This is the portfolio that includes Amazon’s Web-Scale Computing services, things like S3 (Simple Storage Service), EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) and SQS (Simple Queue Service), to, as Vogels puts it, reduce the “many menial tasks of managing a large server infrastructure.” At less than a quarter of a million, Vogels says the company’s developer business is small potatoes compared to its retailer and third-party seller businesses today. But he expresses high hopes that Amazon will be able to bulk up that piece of the biz. And, even if the numbers aren’t high, he seems to think the activity is pretty cool: “We’re pleasantly surprised by the reaction of the developer community to the services we’ve launched.
