American Idol vs. U.S. Presidents

We received the weirdest press release from PR firm GolinHarris the other day. Actually, it wasn’t even a release, it was just a mass e-mail with no headline that starts: “A number of people have been asking for an updated graph that clearly shows that one person can vote numerous times for American Idol, since this is not the case for the presidential election.” Huh?

Anyway, it came with an attached chart (click here to view) that similarly makes little sense. Was the number of times you could vote ever in dispute? And, really, if you’re over 12, who cares? However, we are morally obligated to share any chart entitled “American Idol vs. U.S. Presidents.”

Now, if more people voted in the “American Idol” finals than in the Presidential Election, that’s news. But it’s not even close – 65 million votes in last year’s “AI” finale compared with 121 million for the 2004 Presidential Election.
