Wired News reports Hollywood directors, producers and crews are among those using IM to scrounge up work.
Instead of using the default “Away from my computer” message, they’re creating their own that list their work status, such as “Need work” or “Wrapping up shoot.” Instead of working through agents or placing phone calls, those looking to staff their projects can simple turn to their Buddy List and see who’s available.
“Ninety percent of my work is given to me through a pop-up (chat window) on my desktop,” said one freelance production coordinator.
