Well, this is enough to make you feel old – the yellow dot-eater celebrates his silver anniversary this year. And despite the massive technological advances behind video and arcade games, Pac-Man is still pretty darn popular.

USA Today looks a little at PM’s history, including the fact his shape was inspired by a pizza missing a slice and his first name derives from one of the seven words you can’t say on TV.

“This was the first time a player took on a persona in the game. Instead of controlling inanimate objects like tanks, paddles and missile bases, players now controlled a ‘living’ creature,” says Leonard Herman, author of Phoenix: The Rise and Fall of Videogames. “It was something that people could identify, like a hero.”

And, not only that, Pac-Man gave us Buckner & Garcia’s 1982 classic “Pac-Man Fever.”
