Yahoo has closed hundreds of chat rooms recently in a bid to protect children from sexually explicit content. The site closed the user-created rooms, several of which were geared toward pedophilia, after advertisers pulled out when alerted that their ads were appearing on the same page as these rooms.
However, the Houston TV station that broke the story is now reporting that Yahoo apparently threw the baby out with the bathwater – shuttering hundreds of legitimate, non-sexual chat rooms as well.
“Now, those innocent computer users are wondering how they will fill the massive void on the Internet,” writes the station on its site. OK, that’s a tad dramatic. It’s a bummer that the innocent chat rooms were deleted but, you know, there are other places to chat on the Internet.
Yahoo is not commenting on the purge, “saying only that it is working on improving chat rooms so that more users comply with Yahoo’s terms of service, which ban harmful material with minors.”
