Concerned about the combination of young drivers and cell phones, several states are banning their use by drivers under 21.
The AP reports that Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland and Tennessee have passed laws that force teens to turn their phones off while driving. Illinois’ governor is about to sign a similar bill for his state and New Jersey bans cell phones for all drivers, period.
Researchers are pointing to studies that show cell use affects reaction time and some gabbing drivers are more impaired than drunk drivers.
“I don’t know anybody who says it’s a good idea, or it’s fair to single out 16- or 17-year-olds,” said Adam Bonefeste who, not surprisingly, happens to be 17 and live in Illinois.
